Blown Paint

The design on this painting is created by placing drops of gouache (opaque, water based paint) onto the paper and carefully blowing on the paint while wet to direct the color.  This technique, when used in a document like the pictured award, requires both freedom and control.   Working very quickly allows a blending of multiple colors to create a marbling effect in miniature – that’s one of the unexpected results!   Tiny raised gold leaf dots catch light and bring the piece to life.

Multiple applications of watercolor wash picked up with tissue create the image of antique distressed parchment for this otherwise simple award.  A limited color palette and the application of raised gold leaf dots enhance the visual intent of the piece.

Arava Institute Award

The design for the Arava Institute’s Peace-Building and Environmental Stewardship Award focuses on a painting of the Arava landscape.   One of the challenges was to select lettering styles in Hebrew, Arabic, and English that would complement one another and suit the nature of the award.   The painting is reproduced as a Giclee print each time it is awarded.
