Logo – The Shalom Center

Many years ago I designed the logo for The Shalom Center.  At the time it was a simple image printed in one color ink on the organization’s publications.  It has since become a rainbow design which takes the simple lettering to a whole new level!...

Copper border

I always look forward to crafting certificates for the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society because no two are the same and with a bit of information about the certificate recipient, I can allow my imagination to come up with something new each time. This piece features a border painted with a copper gouache (water-based opaque paint) so it shimmers, giving the entire piece a glow that sets of the most simple layout and palette. Please inquire about commemorative or honorific pieces I’d be glad to craft for your personal or organizational...

“So Now, Write This Song”

A congregation in Caldwell, New Jersey honored their Cantor and his wife after years of service by quoting Torah and enumerating the gifts they’d given to the synagogue. Rather than dip a pen in ink or paint, I brush dabs of color onto the back of the pen nib with a small brush before the pen runs dry.  This allows color to mix as the pen moves across the paper, which produces a smooth transition and a rainbow effect in connected writing.  This very simple design, laid out to work within a circle, has tiny raised dots of gold leaf which make the whole image...

Art Glass Ark Wall

Four years after a devastating fire destroyed the Chisuk Emuna Congregation in Harrisburg, Pa, a new home opened – built from scratch on a hilltop in an established neighborhood.  I was able to work on many aspects of this ‘design-built’ project, the largest, so far, being the ark wall.  Three of us lay leaders, the rabbi, and 3 architects were charged with developing a design for the entire wall that suits a 21st century, light-filled new synagogue. What we came up with is what you see here.  With the gift of Youghiogheny and other art glass from a fellow artist, I began to imagine what to do with the color as we placed the ark against a glazed eastern wall. I learned to cut and grind glass, and ended up with over 400 small panels which I then intentionally laid out, in concert with the woodworker who fabricated the magnificent wall in three tones of wood. Here’s a look at the glass and the process of marking the templates for the construction workers to place, 18 feet above the bimah...

Corporate Sponsorship

After a devastating flood in Harrisburg, PA, a local center for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education opened its doors to a small elementary and middle school until their building was again habitable.  A dinner/reception of thanks was held (featuring upscale versions of tomato soup, grilled cheese, and mac and cheese!) and the University Center as well as the law firm sponsoring the reception received hand-lettered artworks marking the unusual circumstances and neighborliness. Here’s a close-up on one part of the piece which was painted with gouache and highlighted with 23 K gold...
