A frequently-tapped teacher and performer of Yiddish song, Susan has been active as a recording artist as well for many years.  She is featured on recordings with the Old World Folk Band, and has also been included in compilations such as Live from KlezKamp – The Staff Concerts 1985-2003, and the Institute for Cultural Partnership’s What’s Your Name?

Susan’s two solo recordings described below are available through this website and as downloads through the typical distributors.

Deep Skies by Susan Leviton

deep skies for sliderDEEP SKIES is a recording that features musicians including Frank London, Michael Winograd (on clarinet and also arranger and producer), Lauren Brody, Dan Kahn, Avi Fox-Rosen, Dan Blacksberg, and others, in music that ranges from spare a cappella to raucous brass band.  Michael Wex provides a thought-provoking essay.

The CD is produced as a hard-bound book with the disk slipped into the inside back cover. The book pages provide full translations, transliterations, and contextual information as well as Susan’s artwork throughout.  It has been called by a fellow musician “the most beautiful CD I have ever seen.”

ZingedinkSusan’s other brilliant recording is titled ZINGENDIK and also opens a world of Yiddish song to the listener.  Rarely heard songs are accompanied here by cello, harp, piano (Mr. Al Morrison, of Big Band fame), clarinet, violin, flute and more, as well as women’s chorus, and Balkan harmonies in an a cappella song.
