Abstract Tallit Fringe

This couple approached me with a focused and interesting idea. They were both drawn to the message of the tsit-tsit, the fringes on the four-cornered tallit, of prayer shawl, which serve to aid in mindfulness.  If you look carefully, you will see the knotted top of one of the fringes towards the upper right.  The eight white lines that come from that spot separate the color blocks as they intertwine outwards from the point of origin.  This is intentionally a subtle image of the knotted part of the garment. Colors were chosen by the couple. The ketubah is painted in a batik style which allowed me to drop rich colors of the couple’s choosing into areas separated by thin lines masked out at the outset. Gold leaf accents on the first two words of the document and throughout the painted tan areas add...

Music and Nature

Copper border

I always look forward to crafting certificates for the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Society because no two are the same and with a bit of information about the certificate recipient, I can allow my imagination to come up with something new each time. This piece features a border painted with a copper gouache (water-based opaque paint) so it shimmers, giving the entire piece a glow that sets of the most simple layout and palette. Please inquire about commemorative or honorific pieces I’d be glad to craft for your personal or organizational...

“So Now, Write This Song”

“So Now, Write This Song”

A congregation in Caldwell, New Jersey honored their Cantor and his wife after years of service by quoting Torah and enumerating the gifts they’d given to the synagogue. Rather than dip a pen in ink or paint, I brush dabs of color onto the back of the pen nib with a small brush before the pen runs dry.  This allows color to mix as the pen moves across the paper, which produces a smooth transition and a rainbow effect in connected writing.  This very simple design, laid out to work within a circle, has tiny raised dots of gold leaf which make the whole image...
