Physician’s Prayer – personalized

For his 50th birthday, parents chose to commission a hand-lettered and illuminated physician’s prayer to hang in their son’s office. We all sat down together, and the wish list developed around the core text (sometimes referred to as the Prayer of Maimonides), a Hebrew poem by Yehuda ha Levi that synthesizes the same intentions, and a shopping list of personal imagery.  This was the first time that I studied the varied markings and colorings of the boa constrictor!  As a young person, the recipient had raised a pet boa, and it was his choice to have that family pet wrap around the staff of Asclepius! In the night sky (painted in 4 layers of watercolor wash) hangs the constellation of Orion, and winding around the piece on the left side is the passage from the Torah about the pole that Moses is instructed to fabricate in order to stop a plague among the recalcitrant Israelites.  This image, later interpreted in Greek myth as the Rod of Ascelpius, and then accidentally conflated with the Caduseus of Mercury, stands as a symbol of healing today. Additional personal inserts include the names of family members in micrographic lettering, a raised gold star of David, and flecks of mica in the night sky, barely visible, but sometimes catching the light to glitter. The piece was framed in 8-ply mat and frame molding that honors the respectful and solemn intentions of the words....

Interfaith Prayer Service

Harrisburg, PA’s 5th annual Interfaith Program for Peace and Justice will take place on Monday, May 5 at the Pine Street Presbyterian Church across from the state capitol.  As in years past, the presenters will represent the widest swath of faith communities in the area, and I plan to add the voice of Yiddish to the other sounds of the evening.  I have chosen Avrom Reisen’s Dos Naye Lid for its universal embrace of hope and joy.  It’s an honor to find a little spot for Yiddish and its messages among the Buddhists, bell ringers, sacred dancers, and...

Mi ha-ish Award

A synagogue honoring a couple devoted to the community chose two excerpts from Tehilim (Psalms) which best capture their spirits.  Simple and colorful, this is a heartfelt gift, small enough (12″ X 12″) to find an honored spot in a home already full of life’s collection of meaningful artwork and mementos.

Tzedakah Society Papercut

When the Susquehanna Tzedakah Society was founded, I was commissioned to create a limited number of papercuts to honor the small (and growing) but critical number of donors to the foundation that supports the planned giving work of the community.  Incorporated into the design are references to the story of Honi the Circlemaker who planted a seedling that produced carob fruit for the next generation, a passage from Amos in Hebrew and English, the Torah, and the waters of the river next to which the foundation is situated.  The original papercut that I made was sent off to be laser cut in California, and the design team told me that the lines I cut by hand were finer than what they could manage by machine on the paper I chose!  I felt like John Henry!...

Jewbilee! A Day of Learning

On Sunday, March 2, 2014, I’ll be leading a Yiddish sing-along session at Harrisburg’s 2nd annual Day of Learning, taking place at the Jewish Community Center.  I expect we’ll raise the roof, singing our way through all the food groups – heavy on the starches and carbs, to be washed down with songs of wine and whiskey.  A great way to banish the winter woes!

Medieval Star

Throughout the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance, manuscript art filled volumes with sacred Christian, Jewish, and Moslem writings.  While the lettered texts ranged from Latin to Hebrew to Arabic in a variety of ‘hands’ or lettering styles, there were some few decorative elements which were shared among the cultures. Initial letters, those elaborate letters that started pages of text and often featured fanciful animal and vine decoration, and gilded and painted leaves and dots, frequently had their counters-the spaces within the letter shapes-filled with patterns.  These patterns are found in Ireland’s Book of Kells, in 15th Century Haggadahs from Spain, in elegant Books of Hours from France, and in elaborate Arabic writings from the Middle East. Trefoils, ‘golf clubs’ – little patterns that served to fill in blank spaces around letters – have fascinated me since I had the good fortune to see pages from the Book of Kells when the book toured Philadelphia in the 1970’s, and to study with Mark Van Stone, master of Celtic lettering arts.  I decided to give these  doodles free reign, and the result is the Medieval Star, crafted entirely of these tiny shapes.  I used only a straight edge, a compass, and a Rapidograph pen, and built the design from the very center out, allowing it to grow organically. The entire design is less than 12 inches...
