Traditional Beauty of Papercuts and Flowers Ketubah

Everything about this ketubah asks to be examined for its intricacy.  The couple has very specific requests for imagery in the corners, the verse surrounding the central text, specific flowers within the dark blue band, and the papercutting itself.  A piece like this is an engineering experience from the get-go!  What to do first and how to protect the finished areas of the design while painting and cutting other sections.  Notice the delicate text cut into the upper border.  It reads Ani l’Dodi v’Dodi Li – I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.  Verse is taken from Song of Songs and is often prominent in ketubah art when the couple is married in the Hebrew month of Elul since the first letters of each of the Hebrew words spell...

Papercut Intricacy Circle over Blue Ketubah

Papercutting can be a meditative craft, especially when the design proceeds logically but is also new with each cut.  Hours of delicate cutting revealed the shape of the design which was then floated over a painted wash of blues and greens with glimmering touches of gold leaf.  The same blue that was used to create the background was used in the lettering, which always makes for a unified design.

Welcome to Our Home Ketubah

The soft colors and tiny details of this ketubah speak to the desire of the couple to preserve a sense of tradition while creating a brand new ‘space’ of welcome as they planned to create a new home together.  Colors, designs, specific flowers – some representing beloved family members – led us to imagine a huppah supported by strong marble columns and anchored on an equally solid footing.  Each of the tiny flowers is painted as it appears in nature, creating a balanced pair of blooming containers at the base and a cluster at the top center.

Intersections Between the Columns Ketubah

It cannot be more satisfying for an artist embarking on a custom commission than to have people be clear in their vision!  This couple not only imagined the shape of their requested text, but also gave m specific colors and even textures!  If you look carefully, you’ll see the movement of colors, but you may not recognize right way that the borders of the two triangles themselves are different colors!  I mixed gold and copper paints to achieve this look.  Those two metallics are also seen in the columns, where the paint was thickened to create a deep texture.  The metallic colors and the columns?  The wedding took place in a synagogue with soaring gold and copper touches, and the colors of the text itself echo the color scheme of the sanctuary tapestries! What allows the text to appear with such sharp lines defining the shapes is that each letter that spans a ‘line’ is written with multiple colors, splitting the letter to clarify the division of the sections!...

Mountains and the Night Sky Ketubah

I never lose excitement over the visions that people can express when we sit down to discuss a custom ketubah! This one is at once intricate and minimalist.  The sky features two specific constellations set into a luscious blue and purple swirl of the heavens – my idea of a Hubble Telescope shot!  And the mountains.  They are clearly stylized, exactly what the couple requested.  These are two lovers of the outdoors and I am delighted to have been chosen to represent their ideas on paper!

Philadelphia Cityscape Papercut Ketubah

An oak and a maple, meeting at the roots and crowns, nestle both the text and a glimpse of Philadelphia along the Schuylkill River.  Cut from one sheet of paper, of course, this design also acknowledges the meaning of the bride’s surname with almond blossoms in the foreground on either side of the city.  The Hebrew text arching at the top is “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li” – I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.
