Adrienne Cooper Dreaming in Yiddish Event

December 30 is the night that people will gather in the Washington Square area for the third annual Dreaming in Yiddish event, hosted by Great Small Works and honoring a dear friend, Michael Wex.  The heart of the program will be a presentation of excerpts from Wex’s Yiddish translation of Brecht/Weill’s Three Penny Opera, with a stellar cast and orchestra.  I’ve been invited to be part of the Yiddish fracas and will be on stage singing the Army Song with who knows how many other friends and colleagues and Useless with Tine Kindermann.  Not to be missed!  Please click HERE for more...

HAZAK Scholar 2015

From June 24 through July 1, 2015, I’ll be a scholar/artist in residence at the annual USCJ Camp Hazak, scheduled for the Hudson Valley Resort and Spa in Kerhonkson, New York.  In addition to teaching a round of lecture/recitals on Yiddish song, I’ll be hanging an art show in the hotel lobby and will sing people through many of the visual representations of meaningful Yiddish material. This annual gathering draws active adult learners affiliated with the Conservative movement from around the country to explore arts, literature, and Jewish text and ritual in a resort setting.  And what a marvelous cohort of fellow scholars, including Eric Goldman, Rabbi Moshe Edelman, Gloria Goldreich, Sheldon Horowitz, and others steeped in Jewish learning. Come to summer camp! Tempted? Click HERE for more...

Mennonite Heritage Center Folk Arts Show

I’ll have 12 works hanging in the annual folk arts show benefiting the Mennonite Heritage Center in Harleysville, PA, opening December 6, 2014 and running through the month of December.  The works will range from English language illustrated quotes to Hebrew/English works taken from Pirke Avot and the Torah.  Of particular interest are several intricate papercuts.  In both language history and folk arts traditions, the Jewish and Pennsylvania German/Mennonite cultures have many points of intersection, and I look forward to being a featured artist among creators of Fraktur work and other lettering and paper arts....

I B Singer and his Artists

As part of the Koster Family grant that was awarded to Chisuk Emuna congregation in Harrisburg in June, 2014, I will be presenting a lively lecture/recital on the artists who have and continue to illustrate the works of Isaac Bashevis Singer, stitching the stories and images together with threads of Yiddish song!  The date is Sunday, November 16, 2014, and Chisuk Emuna will host the event at 10:30 am.  In keeping with the literary theme, the shul will be sponsoring a huge community book and music sale that day, accompanied by the stellar baked goods that will emerge from the new building’s sparkling kitchen!...

Agudath Israel Arts Residency

I’ll be arriving in Caldwell, New Jersey on December 8, 2014 to mount an art show and begin a 4-day residency that will certainly be exhilarating!  How marvelous!!!  Agudath Israel is a lively Conservative congregation where I’ll be interacting with a wide range of interest groups:  Tiny tots for a Yiddish sing-along with props and costumes, a lecture recital for staff and teachers, a community concert, teen papercutting experiences and Hebrew school explorations into crafting visual midrash, and a program of Yiddish song with older adults.  I can’t wait to see what will bubble up with SO MANY creative people in the mix!! Check back for pictures after December...
