This type of situation offers a mirror to all of us, as we examine the universal experience of acquiring, preparing and enjoying particular foods within a cultural group....

Interfaith Prayer Service

Harrisburg, PA’s 5th annual Interfaith Program for Peace and Justice will take place on Monday, May 5 at the Pine Street Presbyterian Church across from the state capitol.  As in years past, the presenters will represent the widest swath of faith communities in the area, and I plan to add the voice of Yiddish to the other sounds of the evening.  I have chosen Avrom Reisen’s Dos Naye Lid for its universal embrace of hope and joy.  It’s an honor to find a little spot for Yiddish and its messages among the Buddhists, bell ringers, sacred dancers, and...

Jewbilee! A Day of Learning

On Sunday, March 2, 2014, I’ll be leading a Yiddish sing-along session at Harrisburg’s 2nd annual Day of Learning, taking place at the Jewish Community Center.  I expect we’ll raise the roof, singing our way through all the food groups – heavy on the starches and carbs, to be washed down with songs of wine and whiskey.  A great way to banish the winter woes!
