Classic Style Certificate

Gothic, Versal, and Uncial lettering styles in addition to elaborate illumination, raised gold leaf, and a tight ruling pen border combine here to serve the vision of a classical award, in keeping with the nature of the recipient.  I always work with clients to determine for whom the piece is to be created prior to making decisions about color, lettering styles and layout.   Time put in at the front end always pays off in the creation of truly one-of-a-kind art!

Parchment Appearance

Multiple applications of watercolor wash picked up with tissue create the image of antique distressed parchment for this otherwise simple award.  A limited color palette and the application of raised gold leaf dots enhance the visual intent of the piece.

Justice Award

There are so many English lettering styles that span our history, and this piece features a decorative Versal hand, modified to look quite up to date.   Whenever I am called upon to design an award, my goal is to match the text and the recipient through the design for a perfect fit.   In addition, the visual balance requires that all the information and design be integrated to form an aesthetic whole, so here, the citation fits under the first word ‘Justice’ and the gold scales literally provide the balance on the upper right!

Blessing and Peace Papercut

At first glance, this looks like a simple design, much like an intricate cut snowflake, but look closer and see the Hebrew text that surrounds it:   “May this space know only blessing and peace.”   Notice, too, the six tiny hamsa images close to the center of the papercut.   Cut by hand, this was carefully blocked and balanced, inspired by Persian tile designs but clearly a contemporary contribution to Jewish art! A version of this piece is currently available as shown below, hand cut and backed in a range of soft greens and custom-framed to a finished size of 13 1/2 X 13 1/2 inches.  Inquire about having the design cut and framed to your...

Rennie MacIntosh-Inspired Ketubah

A color palette limited to copper, red, blue and black is the perfect compliment to the designs inspired by the early 20th Century artist Charles Rennie MacIntosh.   This custom ketubah, even in its simplicity acknowledges the family backgrounds and aesthetic sensibilities of the couple.   Not every tiny cut square is backed with color, and the manner in which the piece is assembled allows the depth of those blank squares to create a play of light and shadow over the piece.   This ketubah was commissioned in 2011. Here’s a close-up:
