Papercutting

Using X-acto blades, I carefully cut away areas to reveal only the ‘positive space’ that becomes the finished papercut.  The time needed to plan the piece often exceeds the actual cutting by hours and hours because anything inadvertently left unconnected will fall out and ruin the artwork. I’ve been teaching Jewish papercutting for well over a decade, and it never ceases to amaze people that it is such a simple and intuitive craft that can become maddeningly complex if you are drawn to its potential for detail.

Primary Donor Wall – The Residence, Harrisburg, PA

The central roundel of this wall is a brass-colored vinyl cut out backed by marble and mounted on wood.   From the outside working towards center it is composed of the Biblical Seven Species, a geometric design based on the papercuts of early 20th Century artist Boruch Tzvi Ring, and a star design similar to one in a 200-year-old chased metal bowl from Damascus.  All the imagery reinforces the concept of the continuity of life and Jewish spirit.  Parts of the image have been reproduced throughout the independent living center on other signage.  (Fabricated by Welch Architectural Signage) When designing for a public space, the artwork must not only be pleasing and invite exploration, but it must be fabricated to be low maintenance and have great longevity.   For donor recognition purposes, it must also fit the culture of the institution, the setting in which it will be installed, and it should compel people to become donors and have their names added to the wall....

River of Words Ketubah

A palette of color, complementary lettering styles and a vision of simplicity and movement were all that were needed to develop this ketubah.   The small papercut ‘shema’ with tiny gold leaf specks picks up the lightest line of text, written in gold, and brings the entire piece to life.

Blessing and Peace Papercut

At first glance, this looks like a simple design, much like an intricate cut snowflake, but look closer and see the Hebrew text that surrounds it:   “May this space know only blessing and peace.”   Notice, too, the six tiny hamsa images close to the center of the papercut.   Cut by hand, this was carefully blocked and balanced, inspired by Persian tile designs but clearly a contemporary contribution to Jewish art! A version of this piece is currently available as shown below, hand cut and backed in a range of soft greens and custom-framed to a finished size of 13 1/2 X 13 1/2 inches.  Inquire about having the design cut and framed to your...

Rennie MacIntosh-Inspired Ketubah

Rennie MacIntosh-Inspired Ketubah

A color palette limited to copper, red, blue and black is the perfect compliment to the designs inspired by the early 20th Century artist Charles Rennie MacIntosh.   This custom ketubah, even in its simplicity acknowledges the family backgrounds and aesthetic sensibilities of the couple.   Not every tiny cut square is backed with color, and the manner in which the piece is assembled allows the depth of those blank squares to create a play of light and shadow over the piece.   This ketubah was commissioned in 2011. Here’s a close-up:
