A Kholem – Tribute to Adrienne Cooper

The Yiddish world will send up a mighty chorus as people gather from all over the world in tribute to our late friend, teacher, colleague, and inspiration, Adrienne Cooper.  Join us if you can on Saturday night, December 22 at Hunter College for a once in a lifetime concert experience.  Click here to access Adrienne’s site and to secure a ticket.  I’ll be one of the many guest artists gratefully sharing the stage as we honor an open-hearted and bold shining light in our world....

Flora of Israel and the Pacific Northwest

Flora of Israel and the Pacific Northwest

This couple took advantage of the wonders of scanning and Skype to provide input about every detail of their ketubah:  favorite Pacific wildflowers, specific trees to flank the text, the design of pomegranates topping the ketubah with foliage tying into the rest of the border… It’s a great way to design, when I can sit with a sketchbook and hold images up in real time across the miles! The most delicate flowers in the border pop forward as the almost misty settings of the two trees sit back while holding the space in an aesthetic whole.  Beyond the Western Red Cedar is a hint of the Olympia Mountain Range, while moving back from the Cypress are suggestions of ancient Israeli homes and the colorful mountains of the...

Goucher College Needlework workshop

Monday night, November 5, 2012 I plan to take a break from canvassing and visit the Goucher College Hillel in Baltimore to present a workshop which will kick off a flurry of needlework activities!  The college has two Torah scrolls, one of which is a rescued Torah from Czechoslovakia.  Over the coming months I hope to craft mantles for the Torahs, and the program on the 5th will be a hands on workshop to begin developing design ideas and color palettes with the students, and also to offer the students the opportunity to collectively craft a wimple (Torah binder) which will become a lasting part of the ritual life of the campus Hillel.  Check back on the website from time to time to see what the students and I come up...

Art Nouveau Ketubah with a Nod to Fibonacci

How wonderful to find myself learning as I stir paint!  The couple who commissioned this ketubah knew from the outset that their love of Art Nouveau would help shape the design, and this process moved through many iterations to arrive at what you see here.  What looks like a pixillated pair of designs towards the top corners are representations of the Fibonacci sequence.  A fanciful strand of DNA anchors the lower center.  A glimpse of the night sky at the time and place of the wedding arcs over the text, and a color scheme chosen with paint chips became the palette.  Astronomy, mathematics, genetics, Russian and Belgian art history, color mixing science…  What a...

KlezKamp!

Back to the Catskills!  This year’s KlezKamp theme is Jewish humor, so plan your trek to our ancestral homeland in Kerhonkson, NY for the December 23-28 2012 gathering.  I’ll be teaching traditional papercutting as well as a four-day course featuring a cappella folk music in context.  If you can imagine a hotel brimming with Jewish culture, children running around singing in Yiddish, a youth theater group constructing a bi-lingual event with costumes, props and live music, people actively involved in all manner of folk arts from foodways to ethnomusicology to instrument master classes to language lessons, then maybe you can imagine KlezKamp!  Check out the brochure here  and come home to the Catskills in December.  And for a glimpse into the world of KlezKamp check out this video, which includes a shout out at around 5:30 explaining what I try to bring to the mix each...
